Update from the road
February 1, 2008 – 9:40 pmDear family and friends,
Well, here we are 9 days into our trip and boy do we have some interesting stories! I will start where we left off last time.
Just to give you a mental picture, (sorry I have not downloaded my pictures yet) this is what we look like. We are driving a short school bus, pulling a 5 x 8 trailer. Then my Dad and Mom are driving the new van. Brad is driving a BIG Ford diesel dual cab truck pulling a flatbed trailer with a blue tarp covering it. Jody is driving a 1988 red Nissan truck with antlers attached to the front! And last but not least a guy (Paul) from our church is driving an old 72 passenger school bus. So we have 9 adults and 6 kids total and a dog! Try keeping all those people happy on a LONG road trip!
We left Louisiana on Wednesday morning and praise be to our God He provided the rest of our gas money for the trip through Mexico and into Belize. Three hours after leaving Jody’s truck broke down, so we were stuck in El Campo, Texas. He looked into fixing it or trading it, but nothing seemed to work out. He ended up driving it to Brownsville (the border town in Texas) and he sold it before we left.
The next morning him and my Dad went looking around and found nothing. So about noon we went to this lady that is suppose to help get our stuff into Mexico. She really didn’t help us; she just charged us a bunch of money and told us that we couldn’t take stuff in. We decided to leave it on the bus and if the border patrol took it oh well, but we weren’t giving it to her! Needless to say we were there for the whole afternoon and then headed to the border.
We went through the border without any problems, they didn’t unload our stuff and we keep everything. We finally made it into Mexico at about 6pm. We started driving and finally stopped about 11:30 that night. We stayed in a $25 room; I don’t really have to explain what that was like. The price says it all!
Today we drove from early this morning until about 7pm. We have been stopped three times by the military to check our stuff. So it has been a really long day and you can tell the kids are getting restless. We are staying at a hotel just a few hours from Veracruz. We are praying that tomorrow we will be able to cover more miles and fewer stops, but God only knows.
I pray this e-mail goes through. I will try to send another e-mail within a few days. We are still planning on crossing into Belize on Monday as long as the travel goes well.
Love,
The Fisher Family
