LOL Welcomes baby Christina

April 23, 2009 – 5:43 pm

We had someone come to us and ask us to take a one year old baby girl from Midway village. We prayed and asked the Lord what He wanted us to do. We went to the village to see what the situation was, thinking we will just check it out and then come back at another time to take her if we still felt we are suppose to get her. The mother is mentally handicap and deaf, she was taken advantage of by a 52 year old Guatemalan man, who left immediately after. The grandparents have had her since she was born.

So we walk in and the baby is in a Ketchi sling, they hand her to me and my heart sinks when I feel the brittle bones beneath my hands. I unwrap her to find this tiny little one year old girl that looks as if she is only a few months old. She has been so malnourished that her arms and legs look like a newborn baby; she has sores all over her body and on her head. I wanted to weep! This poor baby, how could someone not see how bad she was suffering long before now. After talking with the family and a translator, we find out the grandparents never wanted her and have seldomly feed her. I knew at that point there is no way I can walk out of there and not take her. At times like this the answer is clear as to what the Lord would want us to do. We agreed to take her and then the grandmother tells us the rags she is wearing don’t belong to the baby and we need to leave them. I went to the van and looked in Zander’s bag and found something to put her in, it was blue and way too big, but it worked! They handed us her birth certificate and when I looked down I saw her birthday, March 30! One day before Zeki died. Is God’s redemption so sweet, He took a time that was so difficult for us and has now brought a child born one day before Zeki died. Next year we will celebrate a life and know that God is in it all!

So here we are 24 hours after getting her, she is already making improvements and is actually moving. She weighs 12 lbs., wears a size 1 diaper and 0-3 months clothes. We took her to the doctor she has scabies, worms and of course is extremely malnourished. We thank God for giving us this opportunity to be in her life. By the way her name (given by the family) is Christina, which means “follower of Christ”!

Thank you for all your love, encouragement and support! I have uploaded a few pictures of her to the website:
